View Full Version : Don't Ever Do This...

I started doing some work for a company called Almaxxinc on a few different websites in November. it's a small one guy company and since he was refered to me by some one I know I didn't get a contract before I started work. That was stupid and I knew it then, it just didn't sink in. anyway this guy was a nightmare to work with. you know the deal- 20 emails a day and every other one contradicts what the last three said. but then he doesn't want to much time spent on anything because he's on a tight budget.... Once again, I should have dropped it then but I didn't.

finally after a while of this(and not recieving payment on an invoice that he agreed to pay) I told him that I'd had enough and I was going to have to let him go as a client. I still have not recieved payment and I do not expect to. I know there is nothing I can do about it now. I just want to put my own lack of forethought out here as a warning to anyone else. Always get a contract before doing ANY work and never work with a client that gives you a bad gut reaction to begin with.

cheers

BTW if this is inapropriate for this board or placed in the wrong forum feel free to remove it and I apologize for violating any rules. I just hope some one can learn from my stupidity. :)

Not inappropriate in IMHO. We are all here to help eachother and it is good to share experiences like that. Always good to get something on paper when it involves money. This means in business, with friends or family. The last two depends on the situation but I have always felt when lending money to family and friends that if you agree to do that be prepared to let it go and think of it as helping as it is not worth losing a relationship over.

Business however is altogether different...

Well if he agreed to pay you and you have the amount in email it can be used in court. Also becuase i know how bad that can suck i will give you a copy of my contracts i use with clients and wont charge ya anything. Since i made my contracts i never had to collect a deadbeat debt to date and im very happy about that. Plus it gives the client a level of professionalism when you can show them you mean business.

Let me know if you need and i will ship it off to ya..!

thanks guys, I've learned my lesson with this one and won't ever do work again without anything on paper.

-toker, I have a pretty generic independant contractors license but I would be elated if you sent those my way ( sweeks@kymeradesign.com )

cheers

Toker, would you be so kind as to send the contracts to me as well, please? I do some contract work from time to time and every other time I feel I need a good contract signed...

Thanks,

Eugene

when i work for someone i totally don't know, i get some of the money up front - that works pretty well so far.
